Clovis North Peer Counseling
Overview of Class
Goals:
The Peer Counseling Program is designed to offer support services to peers. It can be an effective tool for providing prevention, intervention, and referral services to individuals experiencing difficulties. The success of Peer Counseling is based on the premise that effectively trained and motivated young people have the ability to positively influence the attitudes and behaviors of their peers. The life of this program is based upon its availability, confidentiality, and compassion for those in a crisis.
Objectives:
1. To provide confidential counseling (not advice) to all students. (Requests can be made by self, counselors, administrators, teachers, coaches, friends, nurse, school psychologist, SAP…)
2. To provide friendship and guidance to “at-risk” students
3. To actively participate with “new student orientation”
4. To act as a liaison with the Student Assistance Program (SAP)
5. To provide support and education during “Red Ribbon Week” (substance abuse program)
6. To provide community services to the Fresno/Clovis area
7. To provide friendship/counseling services to Clovis Unified elementary schools through refusal skills
8. To actively support the program by taking part in fund raising activities
9. To provide conflict management intervention
10. To provide support and services for Granite Ridge’s Peer Counselors and students in need
Networking:
Peer counseling cannot succeed without the support and respect of the Peer Counseling team. Peer Counselors have been trained in listening and decision making skills and should be considered as a first step in student intervention whenever possible. The networking system should include the following:
SAP Coordinator School Psychologist
Administrators Nurse
Parents Campus Police Officer
Teacher/Coaches Community Resource Agencies
